Evaluation of the LCD/TFT flat panel monitors for public access areas

Aerospace and medical are just two areas where expertise has evolved in the evaluation of flat panel displays (in terms of their visual performance and usability). The evaluation of flat panel monitors for public access areas would no doubt require is own 'context of the use' to be defined - but the basic principles for evaluation are there.

The big question is therefore not whether LCD/TFT flat panel displays could be evaluated accurately - but rather who would benefit from it (the display manufacturer? the display systems integrator? the information system provider ? the end user (the man in the street) ?) .... and who would fund it. Its been suggested to me that the companies who provide public access displays are more influence by cost than by visual performance - and visual performance tends to be decided through informal assessments run jointly by manufacturer and client rather than controlled usability assessments. Also there are no standards or specs' that try to define the minimum visual performance of public information displays? Things may change when large information displays in public areas become more the norm - when the initial novelty wears off and advertisers / information providers want to make sure that there are getting values for their investment (i.e. that the target audience can see the display under all ambient lighting conditions).
